Major Grant Application Guidelines 
- Faculty members who have no significant prior international experience* during their graduate or post doctoral careers are eligible for this award.
- Faculty members who already have significant international experience, but who wish to build upon that experience to expand their research and teaching expertise, are eligible for this award.
- Priority will be given to applications that support existing institution-level collaborations/exchanges or that will lead to such collaborations.
The application should include:
- a description of the proposed activities, including a discussion of how the grant will contribute to the applicant's research and teaching and to institutional partnerships
- a budget of anticipated expenses
- a letter of support from the department chair

Decision: Mid-May, 2009.
* What does "significant prior international experience" mean?
For purposes of this grant competition, a significant prior international experience would include the following:
- Be of at least four weeks duration in a non-U.S. location
- Involve professional engagement in the local culture, through one of the following:
- Formal study of the local language and culture
- Individual research on the local culture
- Collaborative research with counterparts in the local culture
- Teaching in the local community
- Residence with a local host family
- Serving as a consultant for local businesses or organizations
