Master of Science for Teachers of Chemistry

This degree program is designed for those persons interested in improving their subject matter background in Chemistry in order to teach at the Secondary School level.

Admission

Students wishing to enroll in the Master of Science for Teachers program must meet one of the following admission requirements:

  1. education courses sufficient for certification
  2. three years' experience in teaching, or
  3. current full-time participation in teaching.

The student should have had some undergraduate work in Chemistry, but normally less than that required for an undergraduate degree in Chemistry. In exceptional cases, a student without undergraduate work in Chemistry may be admitted to the program, but might be required to take additional work to prepare for graduate study. All students must show evidence of the ability to pursue graduate work successfully by their undergraduate record and letters of recommendation; or by previous work at the graduate level. Prospective students are urged to consult with the chairman of the Chemistry Department prior to application.

Requirements
  • The student must pass, with a grade of B- or higher, 30 credits of subject matter course work, approved by his adviser.
  • Courses taken in an Education department are normally not allowed.
  • Certain subject matter included in the usual undergraduate major in Chemistry may be approved.
  • A limited amount of subject matter outside of chemistry, but in related fields, may be included in the 30 credits.
  • Up to six credits taken at another approved school may be transferred.
  • The work must be completed within six years from the time of registration for the first work taken for the degree.
