Chemistry graduate student orientation
Fall 2009

All Chemistry Department Orientation, TA Seminars and Placement Exams will be held in Room L1 Iddles Auditorium, Parsons Hall, unless otherwise noted.

August  
24 Mon. Commuters: Please go to Parking Services to purchase a parking pass prior to coming to orientation. You will need to bring your driver's license with you and proof of an off-campus address.
  8:30 am General meeting for new students. Department welcome, administrative orientation, TA course introduction and assignment, keys issued, photos taken, sign up for advising session and tour of building (if time allows).
  10:30 am-12:30 pm Placement Exam #1 (Physical)
  Lunch will be provided in Iddles Lobby.
  1:30-3:30 pm Placement Exam #2 (Analytical)
25 Tues. 8:00 am-12:30 pm Graduate School Orientation-Mandatory
Theater II, Memorial Union Building
(MUB)
Lunch pass for Holloway Commons is provided by the Graduate School.
  2:00-4:00 pm Placement Exam #3 (Inorganic)
26 Wed. 8:30-11:30 am Placement Exam #4 (Organic)
  International Student Orientation
11:30-3:00 pm
Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) check-in. Bring all immigration documents such as passport, I-94 card, I-20/DS-2019 forms. MUB Strafford Room.
  Note to students: The afternoon is open so you can obtain your UNH ID card at Holloway Commons (please bring a photo ID with you). Also at this time you can go to Dimond Library's Academic Commons to open your CIS account and get a UNH email address. You can arrange for payroll deductions on line or if you need to discuss this with a staff person, please go to Business Services at Stoke Hall for on-campus housing, student mandatory fees and/or meal plans.
27 Thurs. 8:00 am-12 noon Chemistry Teaching Seminar Session #1 (Chem 800). This is a mandatory 1 credit course for new TAs. Located in Room G112 Parsons Hall.
Coffee and bagels will be provided at the start of the session. Lunch will be in the courtyard (or Iddles foyer if it is rainy).
  2:00-5:30 pm Chemistry Teaching Seminar Session #2 (Chem 800). Located in Room G112 Parsons Hall.
28 Fri. 8:00 am-12 Noon Chemistry Teaching Seminar Session #3 (Chem 800). Located in Room G112 Parsons Hall.
Coffee and muffins will be provided at the start of the session. Pizza lunch will be in the courtyard (or Iddles foyer if it is rainy).
  1:00-4:00 pm New graduate student course advising. Room 121 Parsons Hall. Students will be scheduled for 20 minute sessions each.
  6:30 pm Welcome Dinner at Dr. Chris Bauer's residence in Newmarket.
Directions will be provided, and we recommend people coordinate travel. Spouses and children are welcome.
31 Mon. Classes begin at 8:10 am.
September  
1 Tues. 1:10-5:00 pm Technology Orientation for all TAs teaching Chem 403, 405 and 518. Room G112 Parsons Hall.
1:10-5:00 pm Organic Lab Orientation for all Organic Course TAs.
2 Wed. 1:10-5:00 pm Chem 403 NEW TA Workshop and Orientation
G112 Parsons
3 Thurs. 1:30 pm Fire extinguisher training with Durham Fire Marshall. Room G112 Parsons Hall.
4 Fri. 1:00-2:00 All Chem 403 TAs meet with Amy Lindsay, G112
7 Mon. UNH Closed in observation of Labor Day Holiday.
