Department Instrumentation
Instruments may have been purchased by the department, typically to be used for both teaching and routine research applications. The division that uses the instrument for teaching purposes is in charge. A faculty member in that division should be contacted by potential users.

Faculty Instrumentation
Several major instruments belong to specific research groups in the department. These instruments have usually been partially or fully purchased with funds granted to the faculty member in charge. This faculty member sets the policy regarding instrument use. Faculty will often let outside researchers use their instruments or run samples on them if this does not interfere with their group's ongoing research. A graduate student interested in using one of these instruments should contact the faculty in charge:

University Instrumentation Center (UIC)
The UIC is in charge of major instrumentation on campus. This department has a staff that maintains and repairs instruments, operates the instruments for campus researchers and/or trains them to operate instruments themselves.
Samples may be submitted by campus researchers for routine analysis on any of the instruments assigned to the UIC. Their staff will perform the analysis and assist in interpreting the results. Researchers who require frequent use of an instrument may become certified operators. To become a certified operator of an instrument, a graduate student must have written authorization from a faculty member and complete a training program specified by the UIC.
