Elisa Monte Dance, one of New York City’s most respected contemporary dance companies, was founded in 1981 and earned early recognition as the “best company” at the Paris International Dance Festival in 1982. Since then, the company has toured more than 35 countries across Europe, Asia, Africa, Latin America, and North America.
In 2008-09, Elisa Monte Dance will premiere a new work, Zydeco Zaré, choreographed by Elisa Monte and company members Tiffany Rea and Joe Celej.
The musical score is by Jonno Frishberg and features Jeffrey Broussard’s Creole Cowboys. This innovative work is inspired by the style of folk music originating from African American and Creole descendants of freed slaves in southern Louisiana in the late 1800s and incorporates the syncopated sound and movements that are found in Zydeco.
This project was commissioned by the Performing Arts Society of Acadiana.
“…there is a fresh, vital new look to [Monte’s] work…”
