14th Annual URC Set for April 12–27, 2013

Registration for the 14th Annual Undergraduate Research Conference is open through March 1. Faculty members are encouraged to urge students to participate.

Since URC was launched in 2000, faculty mentor participation has gone from 83 to 315 in 2012. Student presenters have risen from 159 to 1,139. For those who are debating whether to become a faculty mentor, here are the top 10 reasons for doing so:

1. Nearly 96 percent of participating students say the URC had a positive impact on their academic experience.

New England TRIO Day Feb. 21-22

Services that aid low income and first-generation college students and those with disabilities will be heralded Feb. 21 and 22 in Nashua as New Hampshire hosts New England TRiO Day for the first time in six years. The federal TRiO programs promote educational equality and provide educational opportunity regardless of race, ethnic background or economic circumstance. TRiO Day is celebrated around the country in February.

UNH Jumps Up Six in Peace Corps College Rankings of Volunteers

Among the hundreds of paths UNH graduates choose to take, joining the Peace Corps continues to place the university in the top medium-size schools producing volunteers for the international service group. 

Based on results released Tuesday, Feb. 5, UNH rose from No. 18 to No. 12 on the Peace Corps’ 2013 list of medium-size schools that saw its graduates enter the nonprofit service organization.  

UNH School of Law to Fully Integrate with UNH

Full integration of the University of New Hampshire School of Law with UNH will soon be underway after governing bodies for both institutions recently voted unanimously to begin the process. The integration is expected to be complete early in 2014.  

Research and Engagement Academy Inducts Class of 2013

UNH’s Research and Engagement Academy inducted 20 faculty members into its third Academy class for the spring of 2013. The Academy is a cohort based faculty development learning community designed to enhance faculty members’ scholarly careers by strengthening the quality and quantity of proposals submitted to external funders and increase the diversity of faculty who are awarded grant funding. This faculty development Academy is one of several programs offered by the Office of the Senior Vice Provost for Engagement and Academic Outreach and the Office of Research Development &

J Term 2013 Sees Growth

The first January term (J-term) at UNH was in 2010. More than 440 students signed up to take one of the 27 undergraduate and eight graduate courses that were taught online, through distance-learning, and in classrooms.

I used to think the country western song “Proud to be an American” by Lee Greenwood was just a little bit hokey.  You know: “And I'm proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free.”  I thought it sounded, oh, I don’t know.  Like it took things a little too far. That it was a little too much. 

Wildcat Transit Adds New Rochester/Route 125 Corridor Route

University of New Hampshire Transportation Services will begin weekday public transit service between Rochester and UNH/Durham Monday, Feb. 18, 2013. Wildcat Transit’s “Route 125, Rochester Express” will have seven daily runs Monday through Friday.  

Director of the UNH-M Library Named Interim UNH Library Dean

Annie Donahue, director of the UNH-Manchester library has been named interim dean UNH library. She assumes the position Feb. 14.  

Health Services Offers Tips on Avoiding the Flu

While some people think the flu vaccine is for the very young or the very old, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) actually recommends that everyone, with the exception of babies under 6 months old, get an annual flu vaccine.
