Gingerbread House Fundraiser Draws Record Number of Competitors

Wednesday, December 19, 2012

A record turnout for the 4th annual gingerbread house contest that benefits the cancer support program On Belay drew 94 teams and raised more than $3,000 for the local nonprofit.

On Belay provides unique adventure-based programs that build community among young people who have or have had a family member with cancer.

Last year, 60 teams competed in the fundraiser that began about four years ago with 15 teams. The event is run by students who reside in SERC (South East Residential Community) B.

"It was so great to have so many families and students participate in the gingerbread house contest.  It is a wonderful way to contribute to On Belay while having fun and being in the midst of community while working on gingerbread house creations," says Ruth Abelmann. associate director of Residential Life and On Belay board member.

On Belay programs are for ages 9-19, and are available to anyone. Staff and volunteers are trained in the art of fun and adventure, and programs are aimed at giving kids a chance to take a “day off” from their family’s illness.
