ENGL 773: British Literature of the 20th Century (poetry of Hardy, Yeats, and Eliot) Glen Cavaliero

The course provides a study of the work of three of the leading British poets of the early twentieth century: Thomas Hardy, W. B. Yeats, and T. S. Eliot. It also takes into consideration lesser writers of the period. Attention is paid to the social, political, and cultural background of each poet. While the structure of the course emphasizes the historical context of the poetry, close consideration also is given to its linguistic qualities, and students are encouraged to engage in textual analysis and class discussion.

Glen Cavaliero received an M.A. in history at Oxford, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in English at Cambridge. He is a Fellow Commoner of St. Catharine's College, Cambridge, a member of the Faculty of English, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. In addition to numerous articles, his publications include John Cowper Powys: Novelist (1973), The Rural Tradition in the English Novel (1977), A Reading of E.M. Forster (1979), Charles Williams: Poet of Theology (1983), and six collections of poetry. More recent publications include The Supernatural and English Fiction (1995), The Alchemy of Laughter (2000), and Ancestral Haunt (2002).
