What We Do - Major Events!

The Black Student Union is known for its annual Kwanzaa Celebration in December. Each year, we have African dancers and drummers, guest speakers and catered food from various restaurants in Boston and Portsmouth to help celebrate the history of Kwanzaa and what the holiday means to Black culture. This event has been well attended by all members of the UNH and Durham communities encompassing various cultural identities..

This year, the Black Student Union also hosted an Islands Night, in November, which educated the UNH community about the various islands and cultures of the Caribbean. The night was coupled with live music, games, facts and appetizers featured in those countries.

We have also been involved in numerous collaborations and support roles this year, and in previous years, with the Sexual Harassment and Rape Prevention Program (SHARPP), the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, the CONNECT program, Discover UNH, and a multitude of classroom discussions surrounding diversity and race issues. As a minority student organization, we view our responsibility to diversity as equal to that of administration, faculty, and community members. We strive to be leaders individually and collectively through our involvement, both as students and in our programming, here at the University of New Hampshire.
