Area of Research Interest

My undergraduate research project will entail producing a recombinant glycoprotein hormone derived from lamprey to be characterized and used for immunological, biochemical, and physiological studies. The production of the protein will utilize an insect cell line (Drosophila melanogaster) to produce the recombinant hormone. This will include vector preparation, transfection in to the S2 cell line, co-expression of both hormone subunits, final protein production from the cell line, and purification of the protein using affinity chromatography. I have begun the initial steps that include a thorough literature search, review of various protocols for producing rGTH, and preparation of a proposal. Overall, my time in the Sower lab has given me an understanding of proper laboratory maintenance. I have performed histology, steroid and peptide radioimmunoassay, and plasmid preparation. These skills, including a new understanding of cell culture and virology, will help me to be successful with the research.

Background

After studying Biochemistry for the past three years at UNH, it has given me the ability to narrow down what I would like to pursue as a future career. I have obtained a background in Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Genetics, and Endocrinology aside from taking general Biochemistry classes. This overall idea of the sciences has given me a great deal of respect for the efforts involved with organizing a successful laboratory. Skills that I have learned in Quantitative Chemical Analysis and other such meticulous labs have prepared me for my future goals of working in the Biotechnology industry. My work in the lab as an undergraduate has prepared me well for future graduate work as well as industry research.
