Captain William C. Pizzano began his long military career in July 1944 as a cadet in the UNH Army ROTC program. In 1945, he was called to active duty serving in the United States Navy as an enlisted man assigned to the Navy Amphibious Forces. Upon release from active duty in 1946, he returned to the University of New Hampshire as a student and football player. He graduated in 1949 with a BS in Business Administration. He was subsequently commissioned an ensign in the US Navy Reserve. He later continued his education and earned a Civil Engineering Degree from Lowell University.
During his military career, Captain Pizzano served in numerous positions and locations: Ship Supply Activation Division 1-1, Boston; Supply Officer, Naval Reserve Center, Boston; US Military Sealift Command; Executive Officer, Aviation Maintenance Unit 1001, NAS South Weymouth; Commanding Officer, Aviation Maintenance Unit 291, NAS South Weymouth; Naval Facilities Engineering Unit 1001; Commanding Officer, Defense Contract Administration Services Unit, Boston; and was a member of the Recruiting District Assistance Council, Boston.
Captain Pizzano served as an officer in the Naval Reserve for thirty-eight years until his retirement in 1987 aboard the USS Constitution. At his retirement ceremony, he was presented with a flag that was flown over the USS Constitution and the Naval Air Station, South Weymouth. Captain Pizzano’s decorations include the Joint Services Commendation Medal, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation with Bronze Star, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Naval Reserve Medal, and the Gold Wreath Recruiting Award with Silver Star.
Captain Pizzano contributed to the University of New Hampshire in several different roles. He served for sixteen years as the UNH Director of Alumni Activities orchestrating memorable social events for Wildcat enthusiasts. He also served for one year as president of the 100 Club and was a member of the athletics Hall of Fame Committee for five years. During the past two and one-half years, Captain Pizzano has served as the Director of the Wildcat Athletics Council and was recently honored at halftime of the homecoming football game for his many accomplishments. Also in 2003, he was awarded the Robert “Bo” Dickson Football Spirit Award by the Athletic Department and the Alumni Meritorious Service Award from the UNH Alumni Association for extraordinary service to his alma mater.
Captain Pizzano has served seven years as the alumni advisor to the UNH ROTC Alumni Chapter. During that period, he helped the organization grow to 400 members and professionally induct 22 of its most distinguished veterans into the ROTC Hall of Fame. His leadership and vision on the Advisory Board has enhanced community support for the Army and Air Force ROTC programs.
For outstanding service to the United States Navy, the University of New Hampshire, and the Army/Air Force ROTC programs, Captain William C. Pizzano is inducted into the ROTC Hall of Fame.
