BRIGADIER GENERAL EDWARD J. HASELTINE, U.S. AIR FORCE

Brigadier General Edward J. Haseltine graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1931, earning a Bachelor of Science in Economics and an ROTC commission as a second lieutenant in the Infantry.

He was assigned to the Army Air Corps in 1942. From 1942 until 1945, General Haseltine had various assignments with the Eastern Flying Training Command and the Training Command Headquarters. In 1945, he was assigned to the headquarters of the 20th Air Force on Guam as a Deputy Chief of Staff for Administration.

He attended the Air War College, graduating in June 1955 and served as Deputy Commander of the 94th Troop Carrier Wing Reserve. Later, he was assigned as Deputy Commander of the First Air Force Reserve Region. General Haseltine also served on the First Air Force Policy Committee and the Air Reserve Forces Policy Committee.

Having held various positions in the New Hampshire Department of Labor, in 1940, he was made Executive Director of the Department of Employment Security. He was active in civic affairs in the State of New Hampshire for many years, serving as the chairman of the Governor’s committee to establish a personnel system for the state, and a chairman of the Unemployment Compensation Advisory Council. A special member of a subcommittee of the Financial Committee investigating highway expenditures and appropriations, General Haseltine was active in political campaigns in an advisory capacity and actively supported legislation involving state employees. He appeared as a speaker before many civic groups and state legislative committees dealing with labor problems, flood control, and community developments.

He was appointed a member of the Administrative Committee on Municipal Courts by the New Hampshire Supreme Court and served as a Judge on the Merrimack Municipal Court from 1952-1968. During his tenure, he devoted much of the court’s time to study the juvenile problem in the local community. He also served as the chairman of the Board of Selectman in Merrimack.

General Haseltine was a former Executive Director of the Associated General Contractors of New Hampshire. From 1968-1980, he held various positions in the Bank of New Hampshire to include vice chairman, president, and director. He also served as a director of the International Paper Box Machine Company from 1980-1996, as well as a director of Saint Joseph’s Hospital. General Haseltine was a past president of the New Hampshire Reserve Officers Association. He also served as a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives on the Finance Committee, the Military Affairs Committee, and the Committee on Labor.

For outstanding service to the State of New Hampshire, the Army Air Corps, and the United States Air Force; Brigadier General Edward J. Haseltine is inducted posthumously into the ROTC Hall of Fame. His son, Paul Lowell Haseltine, accepted the honor on his behalf.
