Lieutenant Colonel Fred W. Hall, Jr., graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1941. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Economics and an ROTC commission as a second lieutenant in the Infantry. From 1941 until 1945, he served in World War II as part of the 1st United States Infantry Division. During that period, he participated in eight campaigns including the invasions of North Africa, Sicily, and Normandy. He served first as an operations and training officer, then as an intelligence officer.
After the war, Colonel Hall was awarded the Silver Start with an oak leaf cluster, the Bronze Star with three oak leaf clusters, the French Croix de Guerre with a Silver Star, and the Combat Infantryman’s Badge. He published an account of his wartime experience in Memoire of World War II, which can be found in the Diamond Library. He was recalled to active duty during the Korean Conflict in 1951, and he retired from the Army Reserves as a lieutenant colonel in 1966.
Lieutenant Colonel Hall earned a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School in 1948. He then joined what is now the law firm of Cooper, Hall, Whittum, and Shillaber, P.C., in Rochester and he remained actively associated with the firm for many years. He was a past president of the N.H. Bar Association and is a fellow of the N.H. Bar Foundation. Lieutenant Colonel Hall also served the state as a member of the Governor’s Council, the Governor’s Task Force, and served as a delegate to the N.H. Constitutional Convention on three separate occasions. He was also Strafford County attorney and Rochester City attorney. Lieutenant Colonel Hall served as a director of various banks and bank holding companies for nearly 30 years. He also served as the state’s civilian aide to the Secretary of the Army from 1970-1978; he was awarded the Outstanding Civilian Service Award by the Army in 1979.
Lieutenant Colonel Hall served as Director of the Alumni Association in 1965, a member of the UNH Board of Trustees from 1966-1973, and Chairman of the UNH Board of Trustees from 1968-1972. This was a time of tremendous growth in enrollment and expansion of the university system’s facilities. He was previously honored by UNH for extraordinary service to his alma mater with award of the Alumni Meritorious Service Award in 1971, an honorary Doctor of Laws Degree in 1974, and the Alumni Profile of Service Award in 1993. He received the 1996 Charles Holmes Pettee Medal for a history of outstanding accomplishments and distinguished public service to UNH, the state, and the country.
For outstanding service to the University of New Hampshire, the State of New Hampshire, and the United States Army; Lieutenant Colonel Fred W. Hall, Jr. is inducted into the ROTC Hall of Fame.
