MLS 444 - Biology of Health and Human Disease
Credits: 4.00
This course focuses on the biology of human health in normal and pathological disease states. Lectures, discussions, and readings cover biological systems including respiratory, circulatory, reproductive, and endocrine. The pathology of diseases that impact these systems will be studied. Additional lectures and discussions will cover topics such as genetic diseases, the epidemiology of disease, immunology of AIDS and bioterrorism agents. Clinical case studies will be used in lecture for studying disease states. Students will be required to read and analyze scientific literature and health information in the current media so that students become more informed of consumers of healthcare. The laboratory component of the course gives students hands on experience with current diagnostic medical laboratory techniques. Tests performed in the student lab will include total cholesterol and lipoprotein assays, routine microbiological throat cultures, and blood cell identification. Special fee. Writing intensive.

MLS 500 - Introduction to Medical Laboratory Methods and Techniques

Overview of medical laboratory procedures routinely used to diagnose common diseases such as anemia, mononucleosis, heart disease, leukemia, and diabetes. Emphasis on the practical application of certain tests along with their theory and practice. Students learn proper techniques for use in a medical laboratory to assure accuracy and precision of patient results. Other topics include laboratory safety, instrumentation, and quality assurance. MLS 650A - Phlebotomy Theory

Procedures for blood collection by venipuncture and capillary puncture. Emphasis on professionalism, safety, equipment, laboratory orientation, and complications of the procedures. Students will observe all techniques and have a limited opportunity to perform them. Prereq: sophomore MLS majors only or permission.

MLS 650B - Phlebotomy Clinical Internship
Credits: 1.00 to 2.00
Students obtain experience and proficiency in blood collection techniques at a health care facility (80-160 hours). Prereq: MLS 650A; or permission. Cr/F.

Introduction to serological procedures in diagnosing clinical disease. Review of immunological functions. Emphasis on diagnosis through serological lab tests of diseases/conditions such as infections, mononucleosis, inflammation and pregnancy. Special fee.

Laboratory safety, mathematics, introduction to instrumentation, and quality control. Clinical significance, evaluation, and performance of manual procedures.
