An Introduction to the Music of Latin America

This series will explore some of the musical styles found within different geographical areas of Latin America and the Latino diaspora in the U.S with a focus on the cultural significance of these musical expressions in contemporary society. Audio, video and musical performance will be part of the series.
March 27 – Afro Peruvian Music. Explore the music, the instruments and the idea of tradition in music including history and development that make this a unique art form.
April 3 – Cuban Music. Explore the music of the largest of the Antilles by discovering different cultural forms that make up the fabric of the music. We’ll cover the mambo, bolero, rumba, bata, etc.
April 10 – Salsa and Latino Consciousness. Salsa has become one of the mainstay expressions in Latin Music in the U.S. Explore the development from its origins to its expansion as a cultural signifier.
April 17 – Latin Jazz. Explore the idiom’s concepts, historical timeline and development of the style within the U.S. and Latin America.
