Polymer Analysis

 

This Size Exclusion Chromatography is equipped with an autosampler for multiple sample analysis. We use 4 different molecular weight range columns (oligomers to 3.10^6 g/mole). THF is the preferred solvent and is degassed online. The temperature of the columns is automatically regulated. Two detectors are used (RI and multiwave length UV) for maximal performance

This High Pressure Liquid Chromatography is used for small molecule analysis.

This Microtrac light scattering instrument is used to measure the size of particles in powder or liquid form from 30nm to 3mm

 The Capillary Hydrodynamic Fractionator is a device used to measure particle sizes below 1 micron in diameter.  It works by separating different sized particles via the velocity profile of a capillary tube.  Larger particles travel through faster since they are more exposed to the higher velocity than the smaller particles which align closer to the walls of capillary (and thus are less exposed to the higher velocity fluid passing through).  Samples tested in the CHDF should be diluted properly so as to not clog the capillary tubing of the machine

This high resolution optical microscope is equipped with a video camera and can record images on a VCR or on a floppy disc. It is used to analyze dispersed system of size greater than a few microns 

DMA Q 800  studies and characterizes materials. It is most useful for observing the viscoelastic nature of polymer.

The Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC) is a thermal analysis tool which can identify various properties of different materials including melting/crystallization points and glass transition temperature regions.  The machine brings a sample through operator specified heat transitions and records the corresponding energy.  This energy can be translated into certain parameters including heat flow and heat capacity.

 
Advanced  rheometer 2000 is a kind of viscometer that measures visco-elastic properties of materials beyond just viscosity   
 Tensor 27 is used to investigate the molecular composition of the substance. It is also able to investigate the protein adsorption.  
Centrifuge 5810R is used to  separate molecules.
