Mission:

The Joan and James Leitzel Center for Mathematics, Science, and Engineering Education was established by an endowed gift to the University of New Hampshire in June 2002. The Center works to transform education in mathematics, science, and engineering at the University of New Hampshire, in elementary and secondary schools, and in informal settings through high quality research, carefully examined practice, and interdisciplinary collaboration

General Information:

The Center facilitates partnerships and initiates programs and activities with the goal of developing educators with thorough knowledge of science, mathematics, and engineering concepts and of human learning; developing learners who experience the joy of discovery and the challenge of understanding and developing learning environments that support active and rich intellectual engagement.

Services to Faculty:

• Collaborate on grants in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education
• Facilitate the development of grants, projects, curriculum (K-16) focused on STEM education
• Support broader impact components of faculty research projects
• Provide connections to local, state, and regional formal and informal STEM education (e.g. schools, teachers, students, science centers and museums)
• Provide evaluation and assessment of STEM education programs
• Facilitate collaborations with minority-serving institutions
• Consult on inquiry-based science education and increasing participation of under-represented groups in STEM fields
