October meeting minutes were approved

Committee/Liaison Reports:

·        Athletic Director – Marty discussed his post-season evaluations with each team, as well as a new initiative to address eating disorders. There followed a long discussion about student fan behavior at the Whitt.  The results:

·        Ryan promised to prepare a letter from SAAC to all students, asking for a shift away from vulgarity. This might be published in TNH

·        Marty promised to work with the Student Senate to think of ways to encourage more positive cheers – perhaps some kind of competition.

·        Amelia and Matt promised to put the issue on the Student Senate agenda for discussion among UNH’s student leaders

·        Awards – Carol discussed her desire to go back to an award (rather than a certificate) for athletes who simply maintain a performance level. The AAC agreed in principle, but requested that Carol develop a proposal with more specific awards.

·        Equity – Pat is working with Marty on sections of the Athletics Department Manual that relate to Equity and Student Welfare. Marty indicated that the AAC would see drafts of the manual.

·        Faculty Senate – Jim discussed a report that Alan Braun delivered to the Senate on the “impact index” used to determine R&R on buildings. Jim noted that the index was developed by academic deans, which might explain why athletic facilities are way down the list on the index. Marty was thankful for the alert and will contact Alan Braun

·        SAAC – Ryan is working on the Bylaw 17 report, which he will complete in the winter.  He also noted that the annual charity ball raised over $2500 for the Red Cross.

Discussion of NCAA Interim Report – Steve discussed the NCAA Interim Report process, which AAC members can read more closely in the NCAA guideline (previously passed out to all members). The AAC agreed in principle to divide into two working review groups – one for Equity/Welfare and one for Governance/Finance/Academics. Steve will be in touch as he receives any draft material from Steve Metcalf and the report-writing committee.

The meeting adjourned at 2pm. Next meeting on January 29, 2002.
