1. Approval of Minutes of February meeting. Minutes were approved with one change: Terri Winters was absent from the February meeting.
2. Report from Gina Sperry on Life Skills Program. Gina -- UNH women's track/cross country coach -- directs the Life Skill Program, an NCAA-supported initiative to provide student-athletes with opportunities for community service and personal growth. Gina went over the NCAA-level goals as well as the focus at UNH. The committee was very impressed with the number of programs that Gina and the SAAC have put together, particularly in community service. It was hoped that more publicity could follow some of the visits to schools and youth groups.
3. Reports
a. Chair -
Rec Center policy on student-athletes. S. Hardy went over the letter that he and S.Barnett had drafted to Leila Moore and Dave Leach's phone call stating that, in his view, the only source of irritation was men's soccer. Dave promised to send S. Hardy a copy of the current policy, at which point the AAC will look further into the situation. Gina Sperry went over the history of negotiations between SAAC and the Student Rec Committee.
letters from President and Jim O'Brien re: Safety Committee Report. The Safety Committee report had prompted action on several fronts. Gale Carey noted, however, that the President did not directly address the recommendation to increase monitors in the weight room. Gale and the Safety Committee will draft a response for review at the April meeting.
b. Committees/Liaisons
Safety - see above discussion on letter from President
Equity - the Equity Committee will make its first annual report/review at the April meeting
SAAC - Matt Drayton (football) had met with SAAC to outline his venture to raise funds for the fight against Parkinson's disease. SAAC is planning more community service projects. SAAC is still working on the alcohol policy.
4. Suggested New Awards Policy - Carol Sanborn and Steve Hardy presented a revised system to balance: 1) the Committee's desire to allow for a "bad" semester and time off campus with 2) Carol's need for a system that is easy for her to track. The basic change is to reduce the number of semesters at a 3.2 GPA by one semester for each category of award. That would achieve the first objective. The committee liked this change. The committee also discussed the suggested change of allowing only one award in each category (e.g., only one pin), except for the certificate. Several members felt that was too restrictive. Carol Sunburn will do an economic impact study to see if allowing multiple awards in the same category will be too expensive.
The meeting was adjourned at 2pm.
