I. Introductions.

II. Review the charge of the Committee - Steve H. went over a handout of the AAC mission, which is basically to make recommendations and provide advice to the President about issues concerning athletics. Carol S. spoke about the need for confidentialit y. Judy R. stressed that she was always open to suggestions. President Leitzel spoke about the committee's role and it's importance, and how athletics was an important part of the university community.

III. Standing Sub-Committees - Steve H. discussed some of the "standing" subcommittees of the AAC, their current members, and the need for volunteers.

A. Gender Equity: This subcommittee is required in our agreement with OCR; it reviews our progress toward equity. Heather Barber is the Chair. Judy R. spoke about Gender Equity issues, and how we are making progress in this area. However we recently re ceived a "C-" grade from the Women's Law Foundation. Pat Gormley is a member, ex officio. Kristin Keyes volunteered to serve. Steve will select two coaches.

B. Fields and Facilities: The 1996 AAC Report on Athletics recommended that a safety committee be formed to examine the safety of our athletic fields and facilities. Judy R. was to appoint the committee. Jim Urquhart is the chair. Kelly Feibel will ser ve as our liaison.

C. Student Athlete Awards/Achievements - for several years, this annual event has been organized by Carol S., who discussed the process. It is a self-supporting event, which honors student-athletes with a 3.2 GPA or higher. Students can invite not only parents but also a faculty member. This year the Alumni Association awarded the AAC $2000 to support the program. Steve H. would like this subcommittee to organize a more effective means of identifying and nominating athletes for NCAA Scholarships. Sam S hore volunteered to serve on this subcommittee

D. Mission/Policies - The AAC's principal charge is to help the President insure that the mission and operation of Athletics fit into UNH's larger mission. In some cases, this may mean helping develop policies for athletics. For instance, our NCAA Cert ification Self-Study discovered that we currently have no policy regarding practice/games during exam periods. While our athletics administrators have historically avoided conflicts, the NCAA requires a written policy. We will have to develop one. Jim Far rell, who is our Faculty Senate liaison volunteered to help on this subcommittee.

Web Site - Steve H. will look into the process of updating our ARC link on the UNH page.
