UNH Search FAQ:
Sherlock application for Mac OS 8.5.

updated 19-FEB-1999
With Macintosh OS 8.5, Apple includes an
application called Sherlock that allows
searching both on the local desktop system (by file
attributes and by file content) and on
the Internet.
When used for Internet searching,
Sherlock acts as a front end
to one or more search engines.
It comes with configuration files,
called plug-ins, for four of the major
search engines: AltaVista, Excite, Infoseek,
and Lycos.
This makes it easy to specify a single search
that is then directed to multiple search
engines, what is usually called a "metasearch."
CIS is developing Sherlock plug-ins for our
UNH Intranet implementation of the
Infoseek and Webinator
search engines.
When ready, the plug-ins will be
posted to the
Apple-Donuts Sherlock archives
for downloading.
For more information on the Sherlock
technology, see the
MacInTouch special report
and
Apple's
plug-in directory.
