META Tags for
CIS Knowledge Base Groups.

Special keywords are used to develop a "virtual collection" of Web pages that comprise the CIS Knowledge Base (KB) Web pages, both the complete KB and individual groups within the KB. The Web pages involved are not required to be on the UNHINFO server, just to be on a server on the UNH Intranet that is indexed by the Infoseek search engine.

Usage.

HTML META tags are placed in the HEAD section of a document, to provide information that is not normally displayed in the browser window, but which can act as information or directives to other programs. Keywords are a common example of such information. Given the existence of a regular scheme of keyword assignments in Web documents, we can then use HTML Forms to interact with the Infoseek-managed collection of Web pages on the UNH Intranet to define a virtual collection.

All CIS KB documents should include both the ZZZZZ keyword to identify it as part of the overall collection and the specific five-letter string for the CIS group (see above). Additional keywords can be added, but these two are required to properly define a document as part of the CIS KB collection for search and retrieval by the Help Desk staff and others. Enclose the list of keywords in double quotes, separating each keyword (or phrase) with commas, continuting on as many lines as needed (with 1024 as a recommended upper limit for the total number of characters in the keywords). Here is an example for the NIS group (case matters for the keywords, but not for the HTML elements themselves):

  <meta name="keywords" content="ZZZZZ,NNNNN">
Look at the HTML code for the recommended CIS KB form that uses Infoseek. That is the recommended model for functionality on CIS Group KB pages, to be integrated according to the design of your page. Operational examples include the Help Desk KB page and the NIS KB page We have a calibration example to suggest how you can test your page for correctness.

If you are interested in modifying some of the search parameters, while retaining the CIS KB focus of the form, see customizing Infoseek search forms.
