Last spring semester (94/95), faced with the projections of a substantial operating budget deficit, Interim President Thomas Fairchild appointed six budget task forces and charged them to scrutinize operating budgets with a view to decreasing expenditures and increasing revenues. Upon assuming office, Interim President Walter Peterson re-affirmed this charge. The resulting independent reports from the six task forces were forwarded to the Planning Council in October 1995. The recommendations included in these reports were, in some cases, overlapping and even competing. Thus one of the objectives of the Planning Council was to digest and evaluate the recommendations, to organize them around common themes or topics, and to fill in the gaps. In December 1995, the Planning Council's report was transmitted to President Peterson.
This document represents President Peterson's response to the recommendations from the Planning Council. Rather than repeat the entire text of the Planning Council's report in this on-line version of the document, links have been created between each of President Peterson's responses and the corresponding Council recommendation as it was originally published on-line. In addition, the on-line copy of the Council's report has been updated to include back-links to the appropriate section of the President's response.
