March 6, 1996 Richard Lugar ends campaign with the following speech delivered in Washington D.C.
A STATEMENT BY SENATOR DICK LUGAR March 6, 1996 I believe that a majority of Americans are trapped in a low growth economy, on a treadmill of limited income and savings hopes. I believe that the United States is vulnerable in a dangerous world because our President has not seized obvious opportunities to further our security and prosperity through bold leadership. I believe that integrity must be restored to government and to family life in our country. With the love and unwavering encouragement of my wife, Char, and our four sons, Mark, Bob, John, David and their families, of my mother, Bertha, and the families of my brother, Tom, my sister, Anne, and my step-brother Howard Caldwell, I have sought the Presidency of the United States. I was certain that I could make an important constructive, historical difference for my country and for individual Americans. My eagerness to help my countrymen reach new standards of integrity, security, and prosperity has been reinforced by my experiences of the past year. I am even more optimistic about the future of our country after campaigning with so many talented and loyal friends and loving family members who confirmed my idealism and stimulated my imagination in finding new and better ideas. I know now that I will not be the Republican party nominee for President in 1996. After a remarkable day of voting in ten states, yesterday, the apparent nominee is a man for whom I have great admiration, Senator Bob Dole of Kansas. I look forward to his Presidency. To further his nomination and election, I will not file as a candidate in the Republican Presidential Primary in Indiana. Char and I will vote for Bob Dole. We ask our friends to do the same. I leave the Presidential competition with special thanks to many journalists who shared many of my hopes for America and who described my public and private life and achievements as reverent, thoughtful, intelligent, humane, and even courageous. A few even imagined that they could see the Lugar family in the White House, leading with great success --- but they could not yet imagine how we would get there. Yesterday brought to conclusion a terrifically exciting chapter of our lives. We know that we are now an even stronger family. Today, we are eager to explore all the dimensions of new opportunities that spring from active religious faith, the support of remarkable friends, and the steady pursuit of important goals that characterizes resilient long distance runners.
