Dole on Term Limits
From a Question and answer session with Sen. Dole following speech at
the Portsmouth Rotary Luncheon on Thursday, February 8, 1996. My view,
in ten, twelve years, whether you had a term limits law or not, there's
going to be term limits because everybody runs, I'm gonna run two terms.
So term limits are here, for all practical purposes. Uh, my view is, you
know, its like Harry Truman used to say, "If you can't stand the heat, get
out of the kitchen." Uh, politics in America, maybe we're not as good as
some other country, I can't think of any. You know, we're the greatest
nation on the face of the Earth. I think being in the United States
Senate's a great opportunity and a great responsible job (applause) and
those who retire, for different reasons, I think just have to, uh, you
know, some are personal, some are health, some are, they're just kind of
tired of it.
