Buchanan on Foreign Policy

Text excerpted from Pat Buchanan's speech at the AARP Conference, Bedford, NH January 26, 1996

I think that was the greatest generation, this nation's ever produced, with the possible exception of the founding fathers. And the folks in this room,[applause] who are members, who are members of that generation most of you, members of that generation. And let me say in certain areas, I've disagreed with my party I believe we have got, to reform and take care and make sure the Medicare system, is solvent. But before we went so hard, in that direction, I believe we should'uh ended foreign aid, we should of cancelled that fifty billion dollar bail-out of Mexico, and we should put and end to these congressional pensions.[applause] ...We Americans, have got to start looking out for our own country, and our own people, first for a change.[applause] I tell ya, to me, to me that means ending foreign aid, and thinking about the forgotten Americans right here in the United States. ...This is our country, what are we doing sending an army over to Bosnia, an army over to defend the borders of Kuwait, when we can't even defend the borders of the United States of America.
