Union Leader: Alexander

Digest of Union Leader article of Sept.7 on Alexander speech to Nashua Fish and Game Club. Digest written by Mark Kuhn

In the same edition as the Buchanan endorsement (on p.18 next to the continued half of the editorial), the Union Leader ran the story, "Alexander Hunts for Votes at Nashua Fish and Game," by Tamara Lush a Union Leader correspondent. The article, dateline Merrimack, began by noting Alexander's speech as, "Emphasizing themes of smaller and more limited federal government." Lush claims that "Alexander, playing to the crowd, also touched on gun control and crime issues." Alexander is quoted as saying, "Take the Gun Free School Zone Act. I would have voted against it in a minute. The worst thing about federal government is that they take over so much responsibility...it corrupts our own sense of personal responsibility." In noting how Alexander "took a swipe at fellow candidates Bob Dole and Phil Gramm," when he said that Dole's welfare bill "...is full of the most baloney you could possibly imagine. This is how the central government gets involved in everyone's lives." According to the article Alexander "thumped" an 831 page copy of the Dole bill while making these points. One member of the club, Mr. Will Flagg of Nashua states his feelings for Alexander in the article when he says, "I like the fact that he hasn't been in Washington very long. He looks you in the face. That's something Phil Gramm and Bob Dole are not willing to do." The article also describes how Mr. Flagg "grilled Alexander on trade policies" in a question and answer session. The article concludes by noting how Alexander supports NAFTA and GATT. And for Mr. Flagg, "Alexander is his number two choice after former White House adviser Pat Buchanan, a Republican Presidential hopeful who is strongly against GATT and NAFTA."
