Yesterday, September 7, the Manchester Union Leader endorsed Pat Buchanan for President in an editorial written by the paper's publisher, Nackey Loeb. The editorial in New Hampshire's largest circulation daily newspaper (72,000 on Mon-Sat and 110,000 on Sunday) ran on the front page of Thursday's paper.
The text of the editorial, "Go, Pat, Go," is as follows: "We are proud to support Pat Buchanan for President of the United States. Among the Republican candidates, and New Hampshire has seen them all, Pat stands head and shoulders above the crowd. Our country is in great need of a leader whom we can trust, who has moral integrity, who would put America first, and who is capable of sending Bill Clinton back to Arkansas. In our opinion, Pat fill all those requirements. Above all, we can trust Pat Buchanan as a man who says what he believes and believes what he says. Of all the viable candidates, he is the only one who has not shifted his positions to curry favor with the mood of the moment. Yes, Pat Buchanan can win. Even the political pundits who just months ago were calling him a no-win candidate are now taking him seriously. His support among voters is risings, slowly but surely, as they begin to understand what he is all about. There are large blocs of voters out there -- from the so-called religious right to former Perot supporters to individuals fed up with politics as usual -- all looking for a champion. We have heard their applause, whether in Texas or Iowa or all the other places where Buchanan has been speaking. His detractors say that he can't raise the money, but this is where New Hampshire comes in. Give him a victory here and the contributions will roll in. He won't be following the usual politician's route of making fancy promises or going back on his word to get financial support. As for organization, it may be smaller and less professional than the high slaried campaigns; but just as Pat Buchanan is a believer, his workers are believers and that can count a lot on the long, grueling campaign trail ahead. The faint of heart may fear Pat's bulldog tenacity, but let's be honest. It is going to take more than smiles and sweet talk to remove a master campaigner like Bill Clinton from office. Some note that Pat has never held political office, but in our opinion, that is to his credit. He comes with no strings attached. At the same time, he has had first-hand experience with the office of the President. Through his service to three Presidents, Nixon, Ford, and Reagan, he knows the responsibilities and also the pitfalls that come with the territory. Pat Buchanan would be a great leader for America, and if you join us in supporting him, he can be a winner."
