Lamar Alexander on social security taken from a voter's voice forum

"Number one is to create to create an environment, a market oriented 
export driven environment that can create the largest number of jobs, 
that way ah the best way, for someone to have a good retirement is to 
make enough during their lifetime to to support it, and um the second, 
is to have a fair social security system and it's obvious to a growing 
number of people the next president should sometime during his first term 
lead the country through a full review of the social security system. I 
don't think that there is any other way to do that unless you clear 
everything else off the table and concentrate the country's entire 
attention on it. That is something only the president can do and there 
should be two objectives. One is to make sure that those already in the 
system should get what their entitled to, and the second is to explore 
ways to allow younger people to begin to use the money that they might of 
put into social security other ways, because they maybe able to provide 
for a better retirement that way.
