Press Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 13, 1995 Contact: Dan McLagan (615) 340-0320 Alexander Calls on Gramm, Dole to End "Mean Spirited" Attacks on Legal Immigrants
Miami, FL - Calling it "a play for votes and an appeal to fear," Republican presidential candidate Lamar Alexander today challenged fellow GOP hopefuls Phil Gramm and Bob Dole to drop their plan to end government benefits to immigrants who are legally in the United States awaiting their citizenship. "I am especially disappointed with Senator Gramm for wanting to end government benefits to immigrants who are legally in this country waiting for their citizenship," Alexander told a group of Cuban-American supporters in Miami. "It now appears Senator Dole is changing his position and going along with Senator Gramm. This is mean spirited politics-a play for votes, an appeal to fear, a slap in the face to every American whose parents and grandparents sacrificed to come here the right way." Alexander said there is a big difference between legal and illegal immigration. "Illegal immigration is wrong. As president, controlling our borders would be one of my first priorities. A country that does not control its borders will not be a country for very long." "But legal immigrants, who play by the rules, obey the law, pay taxes like you do and I do, and who dream of becoming citizens of the greatest nation on earth should not be treated as an election-year punching bag by Washington politicians looking for an easy target. That's not the American way. Phil Gramm--and Bob Dole--should know better." ### Paid For by Alexander for President, Inc. END OF PRESS RELEASE
