Lamar Alexander on the Budget

Balanced budget amendment: Tennessee has one, and so should Washington, D.C. As governor, I had to balance the state's budget each year. That forced us to set priorities and make tough decisions, which is what Tennesseans hire the governor and the legislature to do. Washington, D.C. should balance its budget, too. As governor, I balanced our state budget for eight years, and when I left office Tennessee had fewer state employees, less debt, a AAA bond rating, and the nation's fifth lowest tax rate.
