ARLEN SPECTER - POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY
I believe the core of the Republican Party, and the essence of
American greatness, is respect for freedom--freedom of the mind as
well as the marketplace. Reverence for the principle of human freedom
must establish the relationship between government and individuals--a
relationship that must be defined by the values of economic
conservatism and social libertarianism.
Economic conservatism means a recognition: that prosperity and
opportunity are the products of free markets, not government
bureaucracies or state welfare programs; that economic growth comes
form low taxes and less government regulation; and that we cannot
continue to mortgage our children's future with national debt.
Social libertarianism means a recognition: that human freedom must be
spiritual as well as economic; that our government must respect,
absolutely and equally, the religious beliefs of all Americans; and
that the reproductive choices of American women are not a matter for
government intrusion.
The principles of economic conservatism and social libertarianism
mean limited government, but not uncaring or do nothing government.
Consistent with these principles, government does have a role to play
in fighting crime, in expanding access to health care, in improving
education and in promoting economic opportunity--a role that
government must play in partnership with the values established in
American homes, communities and places of worship.
America's unique position in the world as its bastion of peace and
beacon of freedom demands the preservation of our nation as a
self-reliant economic and military power second to none.
