The following is a copy of a press release from the Specter campaign. It includes the text of the campaign's radio ad which began airing on local radio stations April 17, 1995. The ad is the first "official" presidential campaign ad to air here.
The release runs as follows:
Washington--U.S. Senator Arlen Specter today began running a fundraising radio ad on his flat tax plan statewide in Iowa and New Hampshire, becoming the first Republican Presidential candidate to go on the air.
The 60-second spot recounts Sen. Specter's leadership in pressing for a flat tax to cut taxes without boosting the dficit. The ad began airing this morning, the day income tax returns are due. The spot will air, among other times during the Rush Limbaugh Show.
Sen. Specter's Flat Tax Plan, introduced earlier this year, would bring simplicity and fairness and spur economic growth by replacing the nation's byzantine income tax system with a 20 percent tax on individuals and businesses, without increasing the deficit.
"When it comes to cutting taxes there are followers and then there are leaders. Real leaders. Like Ronald Reagan, Jack Kemp, and Arlen Specter. While others were testing the political winds, Arlen Specter was the first Republican for President to champion a flat tax. A flat tax. A flat tax. That's the way to cut taxes without increasing the deficit. It's fair, simple. And you'll pay less in taxes. Less. Call 1-800-684-1444. 1-800-684- 1444. Alen Specter's 20 percent Flat Tax Plan has won praise from conservatives like Congressman Dick Armey, Bill Bennett and Jack Kemp...This is Arlen Specter. My flat tax will create jobs, lower interest rates and you'll be able to file your taxes on a post card. Let's close the IRS down."
The spot was produced by veteran media consultant Chris Mottola, President of Philadelphia-based Chris Mottola Inc., who specializes in media for Republican candidates.
