Tyco International Establishes Two Major UNH ScholarshipsBy Sarah Aldag DURHAM, N.H. -- Two scholarship endowments totaling $5 million have been established at the University of New Hampshire through a gift from Tyco International, Young P. Dawkins, III announced today. The gift was made in support of UNH's Next Horizon campaign to raise $100 million by 2004. According to Dawkins, president of the UNH Foundation, the Tyco Scholars Fund will support outstanding students in the physical and engineering sciences through a $4 million permanent endowment. The remaining $1 million will fund the Tyco Fellowship in Ocean Mapping and will support the recently established Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping at the university's Durham campus. L. Dennis Kozlowski, Tyco's chairman and chief executive officer, says, "We are very proud to make this investment in the University of New Hampshire. We believe that the high caliber of the university's programs is a major contributor to the strengthening of the region's workforce." Income from the Tyco Scholars Fund will provide four-year, full scholarships, and will allow the university to attract and retain students of exceptional ability to participate in highly demanding, inquiry-based education. The Tyco Fellowship in Ocean Mapping will provide two-year fellowships for post- doctoral students participating in the UNH Ocean Mapping program. The university's Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping, a joint initiative between UNH, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Tyco and other regional businesses, is the pre-eminent academic research center for sea floor mapping offering the only academic program of its kind in the United States. Ocean mapping is vital to the business of laying undersea fiber optic cables in which Tyco is a world leader through its subsidiary, Tycom. It is also an important area of research for managing fisheries and natural resources. "This is a very exciting gift for the University of New Hampshire," says UNH President Joan Leitzel. "It is precisely this sort of public and private partnership that will enable us to provide the highest quality education possible and attract outstanding students to our program." "Tyco International is the largest public company in New Hampshire and one of the largest companies in the world," Dawkins says. "It is setting an incredible example for other companies who may want to join us in supporting this university." With the announcement of the Tyco gift, more than $58 million has been raised in the current capital campaign. "The Tyco gift has given us a great boost," says Dawkins. Tyco International, a diversified manufacturing and service company, is the world's largest manufacturer and servicer of electrical and electronic components and undersea telecommunications systems. It is the world's largest manufacturer, installer, and provider of fire protection systems and electronic security services, the largest manufacturer of flow control valves, and has strong leadership positions in disposable medical products, plastics, and adhesives. The company operates in more than 80 countries around the world and had 1999 revenues of $22.5 billion. August 22, 2000
