The UNH Parents Association announced a gift of $500,000 for student scholarships to The Next Horizon: The Campaign for the University of New Hampshire. The gift, which will create the Parents Scholarship Fund, demonstrates the association's strong support of the University's new fund-raising initiative, according to Association President Larry Hersh.

"We've consistently supported the University in many ways over the years, but the Parents Council felt that because the campaign is such a unique effort for the University, it is critical for parents to make an above ordinary commitment that will have a lasting effect on the university," Hersh explained. "Scholarships for students will help the University to continue to attract the top students."

Young Dawkins III, president of the UNH Foundation, expressed gratitude for the generous support from one of the University's most important constituencies. "UNH parents make up one of the most dedicated, committed groups in the University community. We are extremely grateful and proud that the parents believe so deeply that this campaign is vital to the University that they have stepped up to show very strong support," he said. "Support for student scholarships is a top campaign top priority, and this gift provides a great boast to our efforts to make a UNH education available to all talented students, regardless of their financial circumstances."

The Next Horizon, the University's most ambitious fund-raising campaign, aims to raise $100 million over five years. Twenty-eight million dollars will be designated for student support, $15 million of which will fund student scholarships.

Vice President for Student Affairs Leila Moore emphasized how essential scholarship support is for today's students. "Students are finding it harder and harder to afford a college education, and many graduating with large loans to repay. An effort like this reflects the unwavering commitment of the parents to students' academic success, " she said.

The UNH Parents Council, which represents the parents of all current UNH students, plays an active role on campus in supporting programs that benefit students. In the past year, the council also provided funding for such programs as leadership training for students and a workshop for faculty and students in developing mediation skills.
