Support builds for UNH-M library project
Several New Hampshire-based foundations and businesses have contributed
funds totaling $75,000 to the University of New Hampshire at Manchester
in support of its library renovation project. The Oleonda Jameson Trust, Citizens Bank, and the Ann DeNicola Trust
awarded the funding in recognition of the library's value as a potential
resource for both University students and area residents. Located in the
heart of the city at University Center, the UNH Manchester library will
be home to historical collections and interactive displays emphasizing
Manchester's regional history. "We're very encouraged by the support we've received for this project,"
says Dean Karol LaCroix. "We're confident that the library will be
a community resource to be used and enjoyed by everyone who has an avid
passion for continued learning." Together with the planned City Riverwalk and Civic Center, the library
is projected to give an additional boost to the city's economic development
plan. "Citizens Bank takes seriously its commitment to the communities
we serve," says Kim Meader, chairperson, president & CEO, Citizens
Bank New Hampshire. "We are proud to support UNH Manchester's library
expansion because it will provide a great resource to the community and
will contribute to the development and revitalization of Manchester's
riverfront area." William Sirak, a trustee of the Ann DeNicola Trust that is dedicated
to the education, health, and welfare of New Hampshire's population, awarded
the grant in recognition of the library's potential as a resource for
state residents. According to the Office of State Planning, the majority
of New Hampshire residents live within a 30-mile radius of Manchester.
"We're excited and pleased to participate in making the library a
reality," Sirak notes. The Oleonda Jameson Trust, established in 1961 for educational and charitable
purposes in the state, has also contributed to the renovation effort.
"We are very happy to support the UNH Manchester library project.
It will be a valuable resource for all those with an interest in New Hampshire's
history," says Malcolm McLane, trustee. To date, nearly $500,000 has been raised through grants and individual
gifts for the library renovation, or one-third of the estimated $1.5 million
necessary to finish the library. Construction is set to begin this spring.
Last fall, the university embarked upon The Next Horizon: The Campaign
for the University of New Hampshire. The most ambitious fund-raising campaign
in its history will raise $100 million for student scholarship, faculty
support, stronger academic programs, and improved technology. Gifts in
support of the University of New Hampshire at Manchester library are counted
toward the campaign goal. March 31, 2000 |
