The Art of the Deal

The S. Melvin and Mary Jo Rines Art Exhibition Fund supports UNH Gallery

UNH Foundation Chair Mel Rines is perhaps best known for his skill in the high-flying world of international finance. He is also recognized for his work as a published author and as an accomplished teacher. His wife, Mary Jo Rines, is a professional artist who exhibits her work nationally. She is a director and past president of the New England Watercolor Society, a member of the Board of Visitors of the Walnut Hill School, and a former member of the Executive Committee of the Community Advisory Board of WGBH public television in Boston.

Now, with a new fund they have established, the Rines can add “patron of the arts” to their growing list of credentials. The S. Melvin and Mary Jo Rines Art Exhibition Fund will assist the University in bringing high quality art and artists to campus for the education and enjoyment of UNH students and the University community. Established in part by the proceeds generated by Mel Rines’ recent book, Al Gordon of Kidder, Peabody, published in 1999 by Southport Press, the fund will provide support for artists’ stipends and cover travel costs for artists who visit campus to talk about their work.

The UNH Art Gallery is located in the Paul Creative Arts Center, constructed in 1960 to house the Art Department and two galleries: the Scudder Gallery and the Small Gallery.
