UNH Alumni Association pledges $250,000 By Maggie Paine The University of New Hampshire Alumni Association has pledged $250,000 to The Next Horizon: The Campaign for the University of New Hampshire to create the UNH Alumni Scholars program. "The Alumni Association is very pleased to make this gift in support of the University's campaign," said Paul Caswell, Alumni Association president. "It will help provide access to a top quality education for high achievers who come from alumni families." The gift will be used to provide merit scholarships for direct descendents of alumni. The goal is to attract talented students to the University by providing four-year undergraduate scholarships. Applicants must demonstrate high academic achievement and promise. "The University is committed to making a UNH education accessible to all qualified New Hampshire students, and to attracting exceptional students from diverse backgrounds from around the nation and the world," President Joan Leitzel said. "We're grateful and proud that the Alumni Association is making this generous contribution, which will help us to bring outstanding young men and women to UNH." Students and parents often manage a UNH education at the cost of substantial loans," according to Leitzel. "A key campaign goal is to endow the merit-based and need-based scholarships that will enable our students to graduate with a sense of celebration and accomplishment." The campaign will raise $28 million for student support; of that $15 million will be for undergraduate scholarships. The Association's gift will be made over five years and will create an endowed fund. Gifts for endowment are invested, with a percentage of the income supporting programs targeted by the donors. "That means the UNH Alumni Scholars Program will be able to provide scholarships forever," Caswell said. This gift will certainly strengthen the bond between the University and its alumni families. "The quality of a university is measured not only by the quality
of its faculty and programs, but also by the quality of its students,"
Caswell noted. "Students learn from faculty members but also from
each other. The best way for alumni to ensure that the quality of the
University is maintained is to help talented students to enroll at their
alma mater." October 4,1999.
