
Standard Operating Procedures
1. Purpose: To establish policies and procedures for proper clean and removal of small blood and/or bodily fluid spills.
2. Procedures:
The following HAZMAT supplies can be located on each floor in the supply closets.
· 10% bleach solution
· gloves
· clear plastic bags
· biohazard labels
· leak-proof sharps containers
· brush & dustpan, or tongs or forceps for picking up sharps
· disinfectant wipes
d. Cover the spill area with freshly mixed 10% bleach and water solution. Allow solution to soak into the contaminated material. Work from the outside edges of the spill inward when applying the bleach solution.
e. Any glass, needles, or other sharp objects that may puncture skin will not be picked up by hand. Use dustpan, tongs, or forceps to pick up SHARPS objects. (Refer to SHARPS SOP’s)
f. Wipe up bleach material with paper towels or absorbent pads.
g. Place bleached material, gloves and other disposables into a labeled biohazard bag and place in biohazard container located in B-tower laundry room.
h. Decontaminate with the bleach solution all potentially contaminated re-usable or protective equipment used in the clean up. This includes dustpans, brooms, forceps, buckets, etc.
i. After the contaminated area has been cleaned, use fresh water to remove residue from all surfaces.
j. Wash hands when done with clean up
5. Biohazard Exposure:
If you believe you were exposed to biohazard material that had not been decontaminated
with the bleach solution follow these steps:
a. Skin Exposure: Vigorously wash affected skin with plenty of soap and water while removing contaminated clothing or shoes.
b. Eye Exposure: Wash eye for at least 10 minutes with an abundant amount of water, lifting the upper and lower eyelids occasionally.
c. Seek follow-up medial attention by contacting your Manager or Supervisor for referral to UNH Heath Services (862-1530).
