The President's Vision for the Next DecadeJuly 14, 1998 The University will continue to affirm its historic role as a public research university in the land-grant tradition. By combining the three missions of teaching, research, and public service, the University will provide an unusually rich learning environment for all members of its community. The University will retain undergraduate education as its primary purpose. Undergraduate education at UNH will provide a selected mix of programs in the liberal arts and sciences and programs in the professional and skills areas. Opportunities for building leadership and team skills will be available across a range of cocurricular activities. Undergraduate students will continue to be taught primarily by regular faculty. The University will become the school of choice for a high percentage of the New Hampshire high school graduates who are academically well-prepared and motivated. Undergraduate education will continue to be enriched by student experiences in research and public service: UNH students will learn in an environment where they experience the excitement of discovery and acquire the responsibility of public service. UNH will be a university where interdisciplinary work is facilitated and valued. The number of nationally and internationally recognized programs in research and graduate studies will increase in number. The University will have a strong impact on the development of economic opportunity in the state and region, on the development of public policy at the state level, and on the quality of life in New Hampshire. The University will be an efficient and effective business operation. Its funding will be stabilized. Private fund raising will continue to increase, and there will be adequate funds for student financial aid. The state will understand more fully the importance to its own future of investing in its research university and will assume a responsible share of the cost of higher education. Federal funding will remain at a high level, and alliances with business and industry will be strengthened. The University will benefit from a structure of shared governance and a positive climate of problem-solving across all components. Graduates will remain committed to the University. They will be involved with the University in advisory roles, in fund-raising efforts, and in periodic celebrations of the institution. The University will recognize the accomplishments of its graduates and honor those accomplishments. The University community will be a rich mix of persons who respect and support differences and who recognize that an educational environment is strengthened by diversity. The University will place a high value on freedom of inquiry, intellectual honesty, and high standards of professional conduct. There will be a climate of academic debate and disagreement within a commitment to respect and civility. The University will develop a strong sense of community and be both confident and proud of what it represents as an institution. |
