Second Annual Community Conference
“Newcomers, Neighbors, and Networks:
A Community Conference on Immigration and Language in New England”
Friday & Saturday, September 23-24, 2005
Hosted by:
Center for the Study of Community and
Center for New England Culture (UNH).
Location: Strawbery Banke Museum
and the Community Campus, Portsmouth, NH.
This conference will introduce key themes in New England's migration history and provide a forum for discussing concerns of community in a changing world.
The Program includes:
- A Keynote address by Charles Simic: "Language, Identity, and Immigration."
- Lectures on language, migration history, and community by experts from around the region.
- Special tours of Strawbery Banke Museum, an historic neighborhood that has been home to many immigrants over its 400-year history.
- Workshops on memoir writing and oral history interviews.
- A recording booth where conference-goers can record their own family stories.
- Live musical performance.
- "Crash-course" language instruction.
- Poster displays.
- Public discussion.
- Food and good conversation.
Events on Friday, September 23 2005, will take place at Strawbery Banke Museum. Events on Saturday, September 24, 2005 will take place at the Community Campus in Portsmouth.
