This date is an extension from the announcement in the February issue of the Journal of Mammalogy and the announcement mailed to all members that indicated a March 1 deadline. All conference attendees and presenters must also register. Deadline for registration (without penalty) is MAY 1, 2000. Final Call for Papers: Registration: Pre registration for regular members and vendors is $145 and $100 for students who register before 1 May (date of postmark). If postmarked after 1 May, registration is $175 for regular members and vendors and $135 for students. Registration fees cover administrative costs, printing of conference materials, refreshment breaks, and the welcoming reception on Saturday, 17 June 2000. All active meeting participants (i.e., those contributing papers or posters and/or attending technical sessions) and vendors must register. Registration will occur in the Strafford Room of the Memorial Union Building (MUB) on Saturday, 17 June (1300--2200 h), on Sunday, 18 June (0730--1300 h) and thereafter at the ASM Local Committee desk. The deadline for Registration (without penalty) is May 1, 2000. The deadline for abstract submission is March 15, 2000. Board of Directors, Meetings: Saturday, 17 June (0900--1700 h) and Tuesday, 20 June (1200--1330 h), in the MUB. Committee Meetings: To be arranged by committee chairs. Several meeting rooms are reserved and can be arranged (preferably before 15 March) by contacting John Litvaitis (603-862-2094 or john@christa.unh.edu), or during the meeting at the ASM Local Committee desk in the Strafford Room. Members Meetings: There will be two meetings scheduled for members: I, Monday, 19 June (1000--1200 h), and II, Tuesday, 20 June (1045--1200 h), in Spaulding Auditorium. Both meetings are open to all registrants, and attendance is strongly encouraged. Technical Sessions: The meetings formally begin with the Plenary Session on Sunday, 18 June, and end with last afternoon session on Wednesday, 21 June. The Plenary Session and the Keynote Address will be held in the Granite State Room of the MUB. Contributed oral papers will run concurrently in Iddles, Horton, and Spaulding auditoriums. Poster sessions will be in the Strafford Room, the MUB. Plenary Sessions: Sunday, 18 June (0830--1000 h), Granite State Room, the MUB. Welcoming address, award winners, and honoraria speakers. Keynote Address: Sunday, 18 June (1030--1200 h), Granite State Room, the MUB. Dr. Carlton Phillips (recipient of the C. Hart Merriam Award). Workshops and Symposia: Movements as a link between behavioral and landscape ecology: mammals as models.--Chaired by Patrick Zollner. This symposium will include a panel of four invited speakers. Social Programs: Welcoming Social: Saturday, 17 June (1900--2300 h) on the green adjacent to Williamson and Christensen dorms. Picnic: Monday, 19 June (1800--2100 h), at Odione State Park. Odione Park is on the Atlantic coast with beach access and a visitors center. Auction: Monday, 19 June (2130--2300 h), following the picnic in New Hampshire Hall. Please contribute items to be auctioned at the Local Committee desk in the Strafford Room by Sunday evening. Proceeds go to the Future Mammalogists Fund. Annual Banquet: Tuesday, 20 June (1830--2130 h), New Hampshire Hall. We plan a traditional New England clam bake (including lobster) and vegetarian alternatives will be available. The banquet price is $30 and will be preceded by a no host Pre banquet Social (1830--1930 h) in New Hampshire Hall. The awards ceremony will follow banquet. Group Photograph: Tuesday, 20 June (1015--1045 h) on the hillside adjacent to the MUB. Gordon Kirkland Memorial Run for Research: Monday , 19 June (0645-0730 h), The event will be held on campus near the College Woods Natural Area. Proceeds will go to the Future Mammalogists Fund, and prizes will be awarded to winners. Check registration packet for details when you arrive. Accommodations: On-campus: Student type, non-air conditioned, dormitory accommodations with bathrooms on each floor. Residence hall rates are: single = $110, double = $98, Woodside Apartments (sleeps up to 4) = $240 for the entire conference. Additional single nights lodging are available for those arriving early. Prices include bed linens and bath towels. Registrants may purchase a meal plan for $40 that will entitle them to 11 meals during the conference. Off-campus: Numerous hotel/motels are available in the Durham/Dover/Portsmouth area. A sample list is provided below. Additionally, Pawtuckaway State Park is within 20 miles and has many facilities (603-895-3031) Climate: The weather in June is generally pleasant but rain can make it quite cool. Average temperatures are 75F, but bring a thick sweater or jacket if you plan to visit the coast. Transportation and Parking: Durham may be reached from NH Route 4, which intersects Interstate 95 in Portsmouth at exit 4. Once on Route 4, travel west and follow signs to Durham/UNH (approximately 10 miles from Portsmouth). The MUB is located on a hill just off Main Street near the clock tower of Thompson Hall. We will have a map on the web site. For those using commercial airlines, Logan Airport (Boston, Massachusetts; 60 miles from Durham) and Manchester Airport (Manchester, NH; approximately 35 miles from Durham) are served by all major carriers. Manchester is by far a less hectic experience and fares are often less than those to Boston. A commercial vendor (C&J Trailways, 1-800-258-7111) operates buses approximately every hour from Logan to the Durham area. The cost is $18 one way. We will provide shuttles for those C&J runs that terminate in Dover if request by 1 June (request to: john@christa.unh.edu). We are currently negotiating a group discount for service from Manchester (via Flightline Shuttle, 1-888-942-5044). Details will be posted on our web site. Additionally, Pan American Airlines is expanding service from Orlando and Chicago directly to Pease Airport (Newington, New Hampshire; 10 miles from Durham). Added destinations to/from Pease may include St. Louis and Philadelphia by June 2000. We will shuttle anyone arriving at Pease if requested by 1 June. Parking: Registrants will be able to park on campus for $6. Family Programs: The new 104,425 square foot Campus Recreation Center (CRC) provides the University community (inclusive of conferences) with the latest recreational sports facilities and equipment. For a $10/day fee, adult guest passes for the CRC may be obtained at the Service Desk and are valid for the date issued. Guests under the age of 19 are only permitted during designated family programs. Outdoor tennis and basketball courts also are available on a first-come, first-served basis on most days. Numerous recreational and sightseeing opportunities are available before, during, and after the conference. Portsmouth has a historic district (Strawberry Banke), and a number of state maintained beaches on the Atlantic coast are within 20 miles of Durham. Explore the links provided from this site to points of interest to attendees and their families. At this point, we are exploring the possibility of offering a whale-watching trip. Childcare: The University of New Hampshire is unable to provide or recommend childcare providers because of liability concerns. Collecting Permits: Permits are required for the collection of mammal specimens (including salvage) in New Hampshire. Detailed information and application forms may be obtained from: Wayne E. Vendors: The price of registration for vendors includes one display table in the Strafford Room in the MUB: additional tables are available for $30 each. These tables are not covered or equipped with signs so you should prepare for this yourself. To do so, please: use a standard typewriter; fit your abstract in a box 120 mm wide and 165 mm high; indicate whether first author is an ASM member, a student, and whether a student evaluation is desired; and specify whether an oral or poster presentation is preferred.
